Pathfinder 21 February 2010 London Fire Brigade - Fire Safety Workshop
Members of the London Fire Brigade attended the Plumstead Pathfinder Club Sunday 21st February 2010. The Fire Safety Officer and Firefighters spent time conducting an educational workshop on how to be safe in the home. The session was very interesting and covered a number of topics including the following:
• Fire Risks in the Home
• The Importance of having smoke alarms
• Escaping a fire - having a plan in place
• How to call the Fire Brigade
The Fire Safety Officer reinforced certain aspects of fire safety, including cigarette safety, not playing with matches or lighters and keeping portable heaters away from items of furnishing. He spoke about not overloading extention plugs, kitchen safety and the importance of smoke detectors and how they should be tested on a regular basis.
The most important messages the children learnt were...
1. About planning ahead and how each family should know what to do in a fire and how to escape safely. They were taught - If there is a fire Get Out! Stay Out and Call 999!
Fire Safety Officer
2. What to do if your clothes catch fire. Stop! Drop! and Roll! Jordan helped to demonstrate the procedure very well.
3. Last things to do at night to do at to keep safe before going to bed; like not leaving the washing machine on and closing inside doors to slow the spread of fire.
The children paid close attention to what was being said and answered any questions presented to them clearly. They also had a lot of questions to ask the Firefighters.
After the fire safety talk, the 44 youngsters had a chance to go in the Fire Engine and learn more about how the Fire Brigade uses the equipment that they have and how the Firefighters clothing protects them during a fire.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the session given by the London Fire Brigade and were given some information to take away about fire safety in the home. The Plumstead Pathfinder Leadership would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the Plumstead Fire Brigade for allowing us to have some of their valuable time, for sharing their knowledge with the children and for their patience throughout the afternoon.
This is what we learned...
a. Don't leave cooking unattended - Fire starts when your attention stops
b. Don't take risks! It's better to prevent a fire than tackle one - leave the firefighting to the professionals
c. Unplug electrical appliances if you are not using them & and don't overload sockets
d. Test smoke detectors regularly and change the batteries annually, or earlier if required
Get smart! Get equipped! Get out!
